The most awaited sequel of the new James Bond movies “Quantum of Solace” finally arrived to cinemas this November. Unfortunately, this movie, the story at least, did not meet my expectations.
When I hear the name “James Bond” I think of a classy, myterious, intelligent, sigilous man. However, this new James Bond really meets up to the word “new”. Yes, the classy suits and expensive cars are still there, but Bond is completely driven by anger and revenge and leaves intelligence behind in this movie. There is much more violence in this film than in any others. The new James Bond, instead of being a “superintelligent” private agent, is turned into a reckless killing machine. For me, this new James Bond did not deserve to be 007.
Also, some of the scenes were too unrealistic. I recall that scene from Casino Royale, in which James ran towards a wall, broke it and ran through it. Is he some sort of superman? I can deal with the superadvanced technology, but they set Bond as some sort of stronger human, which is not realistic. In this new movie, I also found it very unrealistic that Bond could fight three men on his own, handcuffed. Finally, the plane scene was extremely exaggerated. When he and the girl, who’s name I forget, jumped off the plane, despite the inmense speed in which they were falling, they both mananaged to coordinate with each other and hold on to the other to open the parachute. I believe that is quite unlickely. I would not mind all these factors if this was a superhero movie, however this is a movie about a human, just like me, only with a different profession.
Apart from the shift of the original 007 character and reality, I must say that the cinematography was good. There were a lot of camera angles so one could watch the whole scene. Also, the quick changes in camera angles helped set the fast moving situations. Another thing that I liked about the movie was the music. It fit perfectly with the situations, so it succeeded in creating mood.
I am not saying this was a bad movie, because to be honest it was very entertaining and I thought the cinematography was awesome. I only thought that the director forgot all about what James Bond is really about and created a brand new superhuman.
I watched Quantum of Solace during the weekend too. I was slightly disappointed at the end of the movie because at some points, certain scenes did not quite relate to the movie and at some points, the movie seemed not intact with the plot. I felt that James Bond had consisted his character throughout the movie but at certain times, I felt James Bond was somewhat different in multiple perspectives. I agree with what you’re saying at the end of this review. It seems that Quantum of Solace went slightly off side too many times especially with the character and the realism of the movie.
Some interesting observations about Bond’s motivations Ana, to what extent do you think that his character reflects the souring mood in the world with regards to economics etc?
Have you given your production much thought yet?
lol my mom said the exact thing about stereotypical “James Bond” image and how it changed with this movie/plot line.
